Bostonians on their way home from work in the Financial District or tourists fresh from a visit to the nearby New England Aquarium can get comfortable in the expansive dining room. The venue integrates rustic elements with polished modern accents. Iconic architecture, raw building materials and vintage finishes are juxtaposed with and flattered by distinctive lighting, glossy brick treatments and marble flooring. The cognac and coffee tones exude a casual elegance and foster a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The exposed kitchen and long walnut bar deliver an experience that’s both cozy and convivial. If you are [asked] for a tip, regardless if you’ve received tabletop service, you are more likely to tip when [a tip screen is] right in front of your face.
BU Today: Restaurants wouldn’t increase prices on their menu instead of a service charge?
The service charge is for the restaurant owner. By law, tipped workers are supposed to net $15, with their employers making up any difference if workers’ subminimum and tips don’t add up to that. But too many employers don’t follow the law, say advocates of abolishing the subminimum. Opponents counter that especially after the pandemic, restaurants’ profit margins are so low that they cannot afford higher payrolls. The Massachusetts Restaurant Association has sued to keep the question off the ballot, saying two separate policy proposals in one question should be ruled ineligible. It’s not as substantial as I would expect.

That would be the last thing that they would want to do. Consumers look at the menu prices. It looks like you’re asking for more as compared to the person who is asking for a service charge [instead of raising prices]. How many people actually say, oh, there’s a service charge? Nobody would have that consideration when they’re just going to have a burger. This service charge is not a guarantee for people working in the front of the house.
BU Today: Do they tip a lot less because they’re paying the service charge?
In America, tipping is considered an ethical thing. It feels like you’re not doing your job as a consumer if you don’t pay the amount of tip that is [expected]. With all his time in the trenches, Jung testified about his reservations to the proposed ballot question at a March legislative hearing on whether to put the measure before voters. He shared his thoughts with BU Today.
They’re asking you to pay 20 percent. The [smaller tip] button is, like, very small, in the corner, where you have to click on it and then write down exactly the percentage. Boston University moderates comments to facilitate an informed, substantive, civil conversation.

Just check out this massive list of Christmas nails, including simple nail designs, accent nail ideas, winter nail art, and more. For another summer in a row, the micro French manicure remains at the top of nail artists’ lists, although this time around the trend gets a fluorescent twist. “It’s a fun design for someone who likes more of a natural-looking nail or who wears more neutral-colored clothing, while also adding something a little extra,” says Koon, who created the looks above. Instead of a vampy deep red or rich Bordeaux, opt for scarlet or crimson red like wrapping paper, holly berries, and the big man himself.
Gold Foil Accent
With a glittery green base, this adorable design showcases little Christmas designs on each nail, like Santa, candy canes, and more. Polkadots are a great option when you want a little interest with minimal effort. This design features blue and white mini dots on a nude, sheer base flanked by blue solid nails.
Green and Simple
The snowflakes and little stars are peppered on top of a nude base. Look closely and you'll see that the black French tip has a touch of glitter that makes me think of a cozy night in watching the snowfall. It has a shimmery shade of blue that trickles down a nude sheer base. Then, it features white moons and stars to seal in the intergalactic vibes.
Candy-cane French tips for Christmas
If you’re into the look of a flame manicure on others, but you want something… less literal, this is the nail art for you. We love the warm color palette; perfect for summertime barbecues. For an extra dose of summer vibes, switch things up by combining shades of pink and purple, creating a delightful variation that perfectly captures the essence of the season. Rainbow nails are quintessentially summer—especially during June, Pride month. Instead of going for a literal rainbow illustration, try this simple at-home DIY. Bright-colored nail polish is what really makes this manicure shine, so really go all in with neon nails for an even bolder take.
Gold-Dipped Skies
To try yourself, grab a nail brush and a nail dotting tool. Paint two coats of white polish (or until opaque), let it dry, and then dip your dotting tool in red nail polish then into a pattern on your nails. For the candy cane stripes, just brush on a few stripes with red polish and clean up any mishaps with a nail remover pen. Chrome snowflakes are exactly what I need to take me from my end-of-year review to my end-of-year Christmas and NYE parties. If you’re gonna try this look at home, grab a manicure set to clean up your cuticles and buff your natural nails first to make them look a lot more profesh.
Double French
Pick three colors—go bright, or go pastel—for this simple design. You’ll need to blend the edges of each color section, so this may not be the best design for your first at-home manicure. Give your nails a modern twist this summer with a vibrant streak of neon, adding a fresh touch to the classic tortoiseshell style.
12 Cute Holiday Nail Ideas to Rock This Season - Yahoo Canada Finance
For a less playful, more chic mani, consider this half-and-half red and green negative space number. The products used to create this pretty holiday party nail look include Bubble Crystal Candy Collection Nail Polish ($14) in the shade Kiwi and Aprés Gel Couleur ($15) in the shade Lucky Envelope. If you want to mimic the length, too, you'll need the Aprés Medium Round Tips ($4).
“The show has so many awesome, Lilly Pulitzer-like patterns that are tone-on-tone—oranges, yellow, white altogether,” she says. To translate this into the nail design above, Koon used gel polishes in “bright, tropical colors,” although she confirms traditional polish also works. “For this look, I started with a peachy-orange base, and then some quick swipes of bright yellow over that, creating these swishes.
Perfect for a simple Hanukkah mani, this look features a milky nude base and a thin blue French tip. This sweet design features a beige base with white and gold polka dots. Cranberry, lilac, and deep purple swirls serve as the base of this matte look. When the holidays roll around, I’m mad for plaid, and this subtle winter nail nod gives you a bit of whimsy and festive plaid lines to balance out the look.
The shinier, the better is her philosophy here; the micro shimmer is almost like the bubbles dancing in a glass of champagne. If you want something special but don’t have a ton of time to spend on your mani, layering adds a touch of holiday magic without a lot of fuss. If you can apply polish to your nails, then you can layer,” says Jimenez.
How do I show everyone around me that I’m in the holiday spirit? With a perfectly done holiday manicure, thanks to the vast Pinterest board of holiday nail ideas I’ve been saving all year. Sweets and baked goods are one of the best parts of the holiday season, and one of the most iconic is a classic gingerman. This manicure features a smiling gingerbread man—complete with adorable bowtie—against a backdrop of shimmering evergreen and delicate snowflakes.
To begin, consider embracing vibrant hues that embody the essence of summer. While traditional summer colors like turquoise, yellow, fuchsia, pink, and red are popular choices, feel free to think outside the box and explore your unique preferences. This year, the trend is leaning towards pastel shades, ranging from delicate baby blue to refreshing mint green, offering a refreshing twist on the classic summer palette. Unleash all of the soft girl vibes this holiday season and tap coquettish balletcore vibes. The simplest way to do it is with dainty ribbon nail art painted on a couple statement nails. Another simple but eye-catching look, a Santa hat is an easy way to up your Christmas nail game.
These shimmery nails are the glazed donut's festive sister, in our humble opinion. The sheer sparkle finish is truly out of this world and makes for an ideal Christmas manicure. The exact shade here is Le Manoir's Oyster Velvet ($22), which comes to life with a magnet. This laurel green shade is just what you need for Christmas nails that stand out from the pack. With a stunning diamond shimmer, Lights Lacquer's I Smell Snow ($11) is both jolly and bright.
The negative space helps balance everything out in a really artful way. You usually see sequins piled up on one another, creating a fun layered look. But we love the appreciation given to each individual sequin with this design.
For those who prefer to keep their manicures minimal, trade in a stark white shade of polish for a creamy vanilla color. It’s a cozy nail design that’s equally low-key and unexpected for the holidays. When in doubt this holiday season, you truly can’t go wrong with a stunning set of long French tips adorned with silver glitter.

Inside you’ll find several separate rooms with rows and rows of exotic plants. From the windows of the conservatory, you can look out onto the Walled Garden and the terrace Butterfly Garden. Is visiting the Biltmore Estate worth the price?
Discover the estate’s origin, its evolution from country home to beloved national treasure, and the family responsible for its creation and preservation. In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA. We had an absolute blast visiting the Biltmore Estate and would happly go again in the future–especially if we could schedule it so we had a chance to experience Christmas at the Biltmore.
The tour is led by an expert guide who specializes in Vanderbilt history and estate stories. You’ll visit areas off the main tour that are based on your interests. The Cedar Crest Inn is an adorable (and pink!) bed and breakfast that has been operating in Asheville for over 30 years. Then, on Christmas Eve 1895, the grand estate opened to Vanderbilt's family and friends for the first time. In the 1880s, Vanderbilt set out to build a grand estate in Asheville. He slowly acquired 125,000 acres of land — 195 square miles — by purchasing some 700 parcels, including 50 farms, according to The Citizen-Times. There’s a veritable castle in the heart of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains called the Biltmore Estate. Elegant and grand, it looks like it belongs in a French fairytale.
As we honor the storied history of this Los Angeles landmark, we look forward to the future and continuing its’ legacy. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned Biltmore buff, my mission is to make sure your visit is absolutely epic. Spend as much time as you wish immersed in another era, and return as many times as you like. Unlimited visits with no reservations required means you don’t have to miss a thing. As Explore Asheville notes, there's much more to the Biltmore Estate than the house itself (though the house is certainly one of the main draws).
An overnight stay invites you and yours to explore it all at your leisure, where more time shared means more memories made. At the beginning, George Vanderbilt was the only person enjoying his books, art, and grand estate. The Biltmore Estate website notes that he was considered one of America's most eligible bachelors until he proposed to his wife, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser, in 1898. The story of the Biltmore estate starts with the man who dreamed it up, George W. Vanderbilt. The grandson of Cornelius "the Commodore" Vanderbilt, who built his fortune as a shipping and railroad magnate, Vanderbilt fell in love with the scenery of Asheville, North Carolina.
The room was designed about the gorgeous 18th century ceiling painting by Pelligrini. Titled “The Chariot of Aurora,” it was originally located in a palace in Venice, Italy. The painting, 64 feet long by 32 feet wide, consists of 13 separate canvases, the central scene surrounded by 12 smaller paintings. The black marble fireplace and walnut mantle were carved by Austrian artist Karl Bitter. Once termed “one of the best read men in the country” by New York media, George Vanderbilt was a reader from an early age. At age 12, he began keeping a record of the books he had read, including the title and author of each work.
It was the initial home of the Atlanta Historical Society and the meeting place for many of the city’s civic organizations. For more than 30 years, WSB, the South’s first radio station, broadcast from its studios within the hotel and the radio tower on the hotel roof became a landmark on the city skyline. Facing increased competition from Atlanta’s modern downtown hotels, The Biltmore was sold to a series of owners beginning in the 1960s who were unable to revitalize the business.
The tour guide also tells you more about the décor, architecture, and design of certain aspects of the house. On top of the massive home, the grounds of the Biltmore are also massive. Just around the house there are shops and restaurants in what was once the Horse Barn, terraces, and gardens. A short walk away from the house there is also a large conservatory full of exotic plants. The ground is also full of hiking trails as well as the Antler Hill Village, which is down the hill from the house. However, because this is a popular attraction, you’ll want to book them well in advance.
One of my best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to eat a big breakfast before arriving because most of the dining options near the Biltmore House and Gardens are expensive. Reservations are required in order to take advantage of the complimentary wine tasting that is included with your Biltmore ticket–but you can’t make a reservation until you arrive on-site. Your Biltmore admission ticket includes a complimentary wine tasting–be sure to take advantage of it (more details on how in the next section).

"When you buy fruit, or bring in fruit that you've grown yourself, there could be fruit fly larvae in or on them — especially if there are little cracks or indentations on the fruit," she says. So, use this sweet spot as a way to catch them by leaving an open bottle of wine on the kitchen counter.
According to Zach Schumm, insect diagnostician at Iowa State University, just about anyone can get fruit flies — and not just in their kitchen. Essential oils like peppermint, tea tree, citronella, lavender, or eucalyptus all have very strong scents and can act in much the same way that cinnamon does to disrupt pheromone trails. You will need to replace the bowl and cling film every couple of days. In fact the home expert said you can make your own fly trips with a dash of vinegar mixed with water. Natural repellents can also work to get rid of flies and prevent them from coming into the home in the first place.
